09 Aug PEAC students beat the flood
Imagine building a house in an area prone to flooding. What innovative features would it need? With climate change increasing the frequency and severity of floods, many families worldwide face the challenge of finding a safe place to live.
Flooding can have devastating impacts on people’s lives. In their Beat the Flood course, our PEAC students are exploring how STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills can be harnessed to help communities better prepare for and withstand flooding.
Together, with students from across our region, they have:
Investigated creative flood resilient designs and engineering solutions to construct a model flood-proof house (pictured)
Experimented with different materials to determine their strength and absorbency.
Tested various structures to see which designs hold up best against flooding.
Learnt about and created water filtration devices to provide safe drinking water.
