NAIDOC Week wraps up at SPPS

NAIDOC Week activities at SPPS wrapped up with a musician incursion and Noongar season posters on display.  Our students were treated with a visit from Boyd Stokes, from the award winning Yabu band, and Jason Miniter.  The duo presented their music to the students, shared stories of musical experiences and the importance of the NAIDOC theme ‘Heal Country’.  Students were engaged with the very talented guitar playing, Boyd is former WA guitarist of the year, and personable messages of respecting family and culture.

Our Year 5 and 6 students also learnt about the Noongar seasons and created these posters (click here) to share with you. Our students discovered that in the south west of Western Australia the Noongar seasonal calendar includes six different seasons in a yearly cycle. The six seasons in the Noongar seasonal calendar are Birak, Bunuru, Djeran, Makuru, Djilba and Kambarang.  Each of the six seasons represents and explains the various seasonal changes that we see annually including the flowering of many different plants, the hibernation of reptiles and the moulting of swans. These are all helpful indicators that the Noongar seasons are changing.
